- Charles Dickens visited the Island in 1859 to report on the loss of the Royal Charter, one of Britain’s worst shipwrecks, in which 400 people perished.
- Anglesey was once known as the “Granary of Wales” because of the large quantities of barley and oats grown – more than in any other region of Wales.
- It has also been known as the “Mother of Wales” for its rich farming community that could feed the population of Wales.
